Buffi J. currently performs with Robert Gomez and his band of musicians, The Polyphonic Spree and Chameleon. She resides in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area working as a teacher, performer, and studio musician. During the 2004-2005 season, she served as the interim principal cellist with Augusta Symphony. She earned her Bachelor's degree in music performance from The University of South Carolina and a Master's degree in music performance with jazz related field from the University of North Texas. Upon completing her degrees, Buffi J has performed with many professional orchestras such as Savannah Symphony, Shreveport Symphony and The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. While living in Dallas and Los Angeles, she served as an active studio musician, soloist and teacher who performed regularly on chamber and solo recitals. Aside from being an orchestral musician, Buffi J excels at cello performance in the jazz, rock and contemporary styles. She began studying jazz and rock styles under Bert Ligon, the director of jazz studies at the Unversity of South Carolina and founded the USC Jazz Strings that was selected to perform at the IAJE convention in 1999. Since, she founded and directed the Univeristy of North Texas Jazz Strings Project and was also a member of the 2001 Jazz String Caucus at IAJE in New York City. She was twice accepted into The Henry Mancini Institute where she performed with artists such as Turtle Island String Quartet, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Quincy Jones and Christian McBride. While in Los Angeles she also performed with recording artists Lili Haydn and Sasha Lazard. Currently, Buffi J serves as a clinician for jazz string education/improvisation and electric instrument technology in addition to cello master classes, lessons and a heavy performance schedule.
